Warning Signs to Have Your Heater Repaired

Record-breaking lows are expected this winter and with that being the case, you will need to see to it that your heater is working properly. A heater malfunction is most likely to happen when heavy amounts of stress are put on your heating system, which means that it will occur when you no doubt need it most.  Emergency repairs can be costly, so you want to make certain to act before a problem becomes too major.

The Warning Signs

There are a variety of signs that homeowners should be on the lookout for, as catching warning signs early can end up saving you the pain of emergency repairs, or going several days without heat.  Here are a few warning signs that any homeowner should keep in mind:

  1. Noisy Furnace:  A home furnace is not quiet, but if it is producing excessive noise this is a sure warning sign that something is going wrong.  A slipped belt or other mechanical malfunctions can result in loud banging, groaning, and grinding noise whenever your furnace is working.  Failure to address these issues can and will most likely result in your heater failing.
  2. Thermostat:  If no matter how high you turn up your thermostat, you just aren’t seeing the results that you expect, there is most likely something wrong with your home’s climate control system.  This may be that your furnace cannot meet up with the demands of your home, or that it is malfunctioning.  Whatever the case may be, you will want to get a professional to look at it to find the right solution.
  3. Increase in Energy Bills: Skyrocketing energy bills are often a sign that there is something wrong.  This could be due to poor insulation and other factors, but it can also be a sign that your furnace is no longer properly functioning.  A furnace that is not running at peak condition will be struggling to meet the demands of your household, resulting in more energy consumption.
  4. 20+ Years Old:  Furnaces like all things have a lifespan.  If your home furnace is nearing or beyond the 20-year mark, you will want to have it serviced more regularly.  An older furnace is much more likely to suffer fault.
  5. Yellow Burner Flame:  If the pilot light for your furnace is burning yellow then you have a carbon monoxide problem.  In these cases, you need to have the issues served immediately.  Your burner flame should always be burning a bright blue, any other color or a flickering flame not only affects the level at which your furnace performs, but it can also end up being a safety hazard.
  6. Recently Repaired:  If you have had your furnace repaired in the last 2 years, then you need to make certain that you are having routine maintenance performed.  A system that has suffered failure in the past is much more likely to have another issue than one that has been running smoothly.

Keeping your home in comfort is important, and as such you want to see to it that your heater is working properly during the winter.  Proper attentiveness and routine maintenance will do a great deal to staving off more expensive repairs and untimely heating failure.  When you do get your system serviced, make certain that it is handled by the professionals at Modern Heating & Air Conditioning.
